Iaido (居合道, iaidō) is the traditional Japanese martial art of drawing the samurai sword from its scabbard, in the same motion replying to one or more opponents' attacks or dispatching them, and then returning the sword to the scabbard gracefully and with dignity.
Some of the goals of Iaido are to develop concentration, awareness, centredness, sincerity, a calm mind, and mental and physical harmony through the practice of traditional sword techniques.
Iaido is performed solo, as a series of pre-arranged techniques against one or more imaginary opponents. It is through repetition of these techniques that one eventually comes to understand the true nature of the art.
At Brampton Aikikai we practice Muso Shinden Ryu style of Iaido.
Classes are held Friday evenings from 7:15pm to 8:15pm.
Robert Zimmermann Sensei, Chief Instructor ot Toronto Aikikai, is our guest instructor on the last Friday of every month. For more information, please visit Kaze no Kai Iaido Association.
